Each year our team of dedicated growers pot up and grow on more than 60,000 cuttings and young plants of over 125 different plant varieties to ensure that our sales area is fully stocked with fresh, high quality plants at all times. Most of these plants are shrubs and climbers, but about 10,000 are hebaceous perennials.
Potting starts around February, but most of the plants are potted up during April and May; it's the busiest time behind the scenes at our nursery. The plants are then grown on in shaded tunnels as well as outside where they are watered and tended as they grow and develop.
About 4-6 weeks after potting, the plants are carefully pruned, labelled and re-spaced to ensure that they can grow into strong healty plants ready for sale. The growing compost contains a special mix of fertiliser to keep the plants well fed, and the plants are also watered by overhead irrigation topped up with hand watering to ensure that their every need is catered for; it's intensive care for plants.Climbers are tied into supports and cane caps are added to all bamboo canes for customer and staff safety.
The plants are checked regularly and only those that are in peak condition are picked to stock the sales area. When selected, the plants are loaded up onto trolleys and transported down to the sales area ready for you to make your choice. The plants have been grown locally and so are acclimatised to the local climate and even to the water. Since we always have such hands-on plant experience, we really can react to the season and the weather conditions, and be sure that the plants we stock are at the correct stage of growth and in perfect health before offering them for sale. This means that every plant you buy is ready to eastablish swiftly in your garden to give you the very best results.
